Using parts work with neurodiverse adults

I have recently trained in Internal Family Systems therapy, and it is a therapy I love. It is so person centred and helps to ensure the therapist 'gets out of the way' and lets the client's parts lead the way, at a pace that is right for them.

In IFS, parts are protectors (help the person) to manage or exiles (vulnerable, often child like parts that we learnt to hide, with our protectors helping us do so). When working with neurodiversity, the neurodiversity is NOT a part, it is part of the client's self. What can be a part, however, may be the managers that learn to mask, avoid, drink too much, or defend against criticism as a result of the neurodiversity.

IFS can help a neurodiverse person to accept themselves and show their true selves, without protective parts stepping in to perform extreme roles that pull people away from a full life.
